Chapter Fourteen
After telling Todd what weâd found, we headed back into town to continue our investigation. The first people we spoke to were Ray and Robyn Pennington.
âThatâs terrible news about Karl,â Ray said, standing in his doorway. Police were still filing in and out of Karlâs home. Police tape surrounded the whole property, and the entire section of path was closed off. They were doing a full forensic examination of the scene. âI donât know who would have killed him.â
âHow do you know itâs murder?â I asked.
Robyn was standing at his side. She nodded to the hive of activity. âThey wouldnât do that for a suicide,â she said. âOr an accidental death. Karl was murdered. No doubt about it.â
âDo you mind if I ask where you were last night?â
âHome,â Ray said. âWhy do you ask?â
âJust curious.â
âYou werenât home the whole evening,â Kim said.
Ray frowned. âWhat makes you say that?â
She pointed to the ground under their car. âIt rained last night,â Kim said. âThe ground under your car should be dry, but itâs wet. Someone took your car out and returned it later.â
I glanced sideways at Kim.
Youâre a genius, girl!
This was met with a long silence as neither person answered or even looked at each other.
âIt was me,â Robyn finally confessed. âI went for a drive.â
âReally?â Ray said. âWhere?â
âNowhere. I just needed to clear my head.â
People did that sort of thing, I knew. Drove around aimlessly to sort out ideas. However, it seemed a surprise to Ray that his wife had gone out. Possibly he didnât know her as well as he thought.
âAbout what time was that?â I asked.
Robyn thought. âMaybe about three.â
Thatâs pretty late to be driving about to clear your head.
âSo you didnât see Karl?â
âAt three in the morning? He would have been dead to the world.â She stopped, realising what sheâd just said. âNo. There was no one about.â
I didnât believe her, and Ray didnât seem convinced either, judging by his frown. Thanking the couple, Kim, Trixie, and I continued back down the coastal path.
âWell,â I said. âA drive at three in the morning.â
âWhy would she be out at that time?â
âI can only think of one reason. Well,â I amended, âtwo reasons. One would be to kill Karl Hoffman. The other would be to meet someone.â
âAt three in the morning? Thatâs risky. What if her husband woke up?â
âHe could be a heavy sleeper.â I fixed my gaze at her. âLike someone I know.â
Kim ignored me. âSo Robyn could be meeting a lover.â
âMaybe.â
Trying to work out who that could be was like searching for a needle in a haystack. With internet dating and apps on phones where you swiped left, right, and up and down, her special friend could be anyone.
We continued to Irisâs shop. It was open now, or what passed for open. A constable was just heading out with a bottle of soft drink as we arrived. Iris was back at her position behind the counter, staring out the window.
âFirst time anything like thatâs happened here,â Iris said as we entered.
