Chapter Fourteen

After telling Todd what we’d found, we headed back into town to continue our investigation. The first people we spoke to were Ray and Robyn Pennington.

‘That’s terrible news about Karl,’ Ray said, standing in his doorway. Police were still filing in and out of Karl’s home. Police tape surrounded the whole property, and the entire section of path was closed off. They were doing a full forensic examination of the scene. ‘I don’t know who would have killed him.’

‘How do you know it’s murder?’ I asked.

Robyn was standing at his side. She nodded to the hive of activity. ‘They wouldn’t do that for a suicide,’ she said. ‘Or an accidental death. Karl was murdered. No doubt about it.’

‘Do you mind if I ask where you were last night?’

‘Home,’ Ray said. ‘Why do you ask?’

‘Just curious.’

‘You weren’t home the whole evening,’ Kim said.

Ray frowned. ‘What makes you say that?’

She pointed to the ground under their car. ‘It rained last night,’ Kim said. ‘The ground under your car should be dry, but it’s wet. Someone took your car out and returned it later.’

I glanced sideways at Kim.

You’re a genius, girl!

This was met with a long silence as neither person answered or even looked at each other.

‘It was me,’ Robyn finally confessed. ‘I went for a drive.’

‘Really?’ Ray said. ‘Where?’

‘Nowhere. I just needed to clear my head.’

People did that sort of thing, I knew. Drove around aimlessly to sort out ideas. However, it seemed a surprise to Ray that his wife had gone out. Possibly he didn’t know her as well as he thought.

‘About what time was that?’ I asked.

Robyn thought. ‘Maybe about three.’

That’s pretty late to be driving about to clear your head.

‘So you didn’t see Karl?’

‘At three in the morning? He would have been dead to the world.’ She stopped, realising what she’d just said. ‘No. There was no one about.’

I didn’t believe her, and Ray didn’t seem convinced either, judging by his frown. Thanking the couple, Kim, Trixie, and I continued back down the coastal path.

‘Well,’ I said. ‘A drive at three in the morning.’

‘Why would she be out at that time?’

‘I can only think of one reason. Well,’ I amended, ‘two reasons. One would be to kill Karl Hoffman. The other would be to meet someone.’

‘At three in the morning? That’s risky. What if her husband woke up?’

‘He could be a heavy sleeper.’ I fixed my gaze at her. ‘Like someone I know.’

Kim ignored me. ‘So Robyn could be meeting a lover.’

‘Maybe.’

Trying to work out who that could be was like searching for a needle in a haystack. With internet dating and apps on phones where you swiped left, right, and up and down, her special friend could be anyone.

We continued to Iris’s shop. It was open now, or what passed for open. A constable was just heading out with a bottle of soft drink as we arrived. Iris was back at her position behind the counter, staring out the window.

‘First time anything like that’s happened here,’ Iris said as we entered.
